New release Bright Shadow

McCoy Tynerの「Real McCoy」から。さらなる自由を求めてインプロビゼーションするように作られた曲のような気がする。

「クープランの墓」（Le Tombeau de Couperin）は、フランスのモーリス・ラヴェルが1914～1917年に作ったピアノ組曲。「Prelude」、「Fugue」、「Forlane」、「Rigaudon」、「Menuet」、[Toccata」の6曲から成る。第一次世界大戦で戦死した知人への思い出に捧げられている。本アルバムではガブリエル・ドゥリュック中尉に捧げられた「Forlane」を取り上げた。こちらは複雑なハーモニーの中でいかに自由にインプロビゼーションできるかが試練であった。

この曲の魅力は何だろう。恋愛歌ではないからかもしれない。

マンハッタンのAvenue Bのアパートに住んでいたある朝に作った曲であるが、どこかで聞いたことがあるメロディとよくいわれる。でも、どこで聞いたのか定かではない。

似ているメロディを持つ曲があったら教えてもらいたい。

ジャズを聴き始めたころ、よく聞いていた曲。エンディングはどうしよか迷っていた。なぜか指が勝手に動いてうまく収まってくれた。神に導かれたのか（笑）。

最初にこの曲に出会った時はただのブルースかと思っていたが、ハーモニックリズムが目まぐるしく変化する複雑な曲であった。

色々考えていた時に「あまり考えるのはやめよう」と思ったときにできた曲であった。

あらゆるしがらみから解き放たれたら、結局残るのは空虚な自分かもしれない。

良い思い出も、嫌な思いでも死を迎えたときは同じものになるのかもしれない。

 NYのHalloweenパレードでMaracatuを演奏したのは楽しかったが、その前後に作った

曲がこのブルースであった。

Jazzを初めたころに作った曲。何故か人は最初に曲を作ると三拍子が多いらしい。

Bill Evansが最初に作ったVery Earlyも曲も三拍子。

Herbie Hancockは自伝で「JazzとClassic」しか若いときは興味がなかったと言っていた。

Milesに会って大衆音楽にも関心を寄せるようになったそうである。この曲からもわかる

ようにHerbieはクラシック音楽が大好きだったんだと思う。自分も若いときはあまり大衆音楽が好きではなかった。

performers to play to their hearts’ content.

 Maurice Ravel composed Le Tombeau de Couperin from 1911 to 1917,  consisting of Prelude, Fugue, Forlane, Rigaudon, Menuet, and, Toccata.  He dedicated the song to his friends who died during WWl.  Dedicated to First Lieutenant Gabriel Deluc,  Forlane has complex harmonies, challenging me as an improviser.

This song is attractive since this is not an ordinary love song.

Living on Avenue B New York, NY, I composed this song one morning.  Many people say they have heard the melody, but nobody knows where they’ve heard.  Let me know if you know where it originates.

I used to listen to this song when I just started to like jazz.  As a matter of fact, I was not quite sure how I should end this song when recording,  but it landed well with the help of god.

This is just a blues song, which I first thought.  It is much more complexed song since the harmonic rhythm changes so rapidly.

Thinking too much does you harm.  So I thought and composed this song.

You shall be vacant and empty if you were to be released from everything.

Good and bad memories shall be the same when you pass away.

I had a blast performing Maracatu Brazilian percussion in NYC’s village Halloween Parade. I composed this blues before and after the Parade.

This is the first song I have composed since I started to play jazz.  The meter tends to be ¾ when you compose a song for the first time.  Bill Evans is also not an exception since Very Early is ¾.

In his memoire Herbie Hancock says he had been only interested in jazz and classical music.  After performing with Miles Davis, he started to appreciate pop music.  This song may have been largely influenced by Maurice Ravel.  I didn’t like pop music that much when I was young.
